Lilacs & Ancestors
Today was a day of simple joys.
Ice cream from Dairy Queen. Sunshine. Lilacs in bloom.
And a walk among the ancestors.
Today was the first time I brought my granddaughter, Kara, to one of my favourite places. A place I often visit for quiet reflection, connection, and remembrance.
Sharing it with her and seeing it through her eyes made it feel special in an entirely new way.
She spent the afternoon leaving flowers on lonely graves, straightening fallen decorations, and visiting the family members whose stories helped shape her own.
She moved through the cemetery with the kind of reverence that can’t be taught—it simply lives in some people.
Watching her reminded me that ancestor work isn’t always ritual and ceremony.
Sometimes it’s a child carrying lilacs from stone to stone, offering kindness where kindness is needed.
Sometimes it’s remembering that love continues long after a life has ended.
It was a beautiful day, and my heart is grateful for every moment of it. 💜
