Quiet Guardians
Every year they appear like a blessing.
Tiny white bells hidden among the leaves, quietly announcing that spring has fully arrived.
Lily of the valley grows all around my house, surrounding the yard with its sweet fragrance. Long associated with protection and peace, it feels like a fitting guardian for the place I call home.
Today I gathered a small bundle from the abundance beneath the trees to dry in the temple. Just enough to bring a little of spring indoors.
I’ve always been fascinated by the contrast they carry. So delicate. So beautiful. So wonderfully fragrant. Yet every part of the plant is toxic.
Perhaps that’s one of nature’s quiet teachings.
Not everything gentle is harmless.
Not everything dangerous appears threatening.
There is wisdom in learning to hold beauty and caution together.
